On 7 March 1890 in Porto, Companhia União Fabril Portuense das Fábricas de Cerveja e Bebidas Refrigerantes (CUFP) is founded, with factories in Rua do Melo and Rua da Piedade.

The first decade of the 20th century is marked by the setting up of the unit at the Piedade Plant and by the renovation of the equipment.

The second decade of the 20th century is marked by the inauguration of the Leão Plant unit, on 20 November 1914.

On 16 June, the Pilsener Crystal brand is registered, which CUFP had been selling since 1903.

For the first time, women are allowed to work at CUFP.
The first transport trucks are acquired.

In October, CUFP participates in the Industrial Exhibition organised in the Palácio de Cristal (Crystal Palace). Pilsener Crystal and the new Super Bock receive gold medals.

On 3 March of this year, a Trademark Registration Certificate is requested for Super Bock, which is eventually issued on 9 November.

The 1930s began under the effects of the Great Depression, but this did not prevent the introduction of new brands onto the market. The Super Bock brand is officially launched and begins to be marketed.

CUFP participates in the Portuguese Industrial Exhibition, in Lisbon, where its beers are once again distinguished with several awards.

A project was presented for renovating the Plant and the construction of a building in Júlio Dinis street.

The 1940s mark CUFP’s fiftieth anniversary, and the company’s participation in the Portuguese World Exhibition.

Difficulties in navigating through the Atlantic make the transport of malt difficult, forcing CUFP to use Portuguese malts exclusively.

This year is marked by the entry of João Talone into CUFP, who would be responsible for the cycle of major expansion and modernisation of the company from the 1960s, as well as for building the new plant.

CUFP holds a significant stake in Companhia União de Cervejas de Angola, a market seen as strategic at that time.

The cycle of technological upgrades and various works at the Júlio Dinis Plant are concluded where, since 1946, 17,666,000 PTE had been invested.

Beer production well exceeds three million litres. Revenues reach a new record – 28 million PTE. The growth recorded is almost 50%.

With the objective of publicising CUFP brands - Cristal, Super Bock, Invicta Negra, Invicta Cola, Além-Mar and Zirta - the CUFP Brewery is inaugurated located in a building in Júlio Dinis street, which quickly became a commercial success and an icon in the sale of beer.

The 1960s were marked by the change in facilities, with CUFP beginning construction of the new plant in Via Norte, in Leça do Balio.

On 13 March the first dark beer began to be produced in the new plant. On 28 September, the President of the Republic himself presides over the inauguration ceremony of the new facilities. The plant had an annual production capacity of 25 million litres a month, and this could reach 50 thousand hectolitres.

CUFP’s Employees’ Centre for Culture and Sports (CCD) is created.

In the 1970s, the beer industry was nationalised following the 25 April revolution, transforming CUFP into Unicer - União Cervejeira E.P.

On 7 August, the Super Bock distribution network was inaugurated in Lisbon, with its own warehouse. The fleet, consisting of 12 vans, exclusively covered the urban area of the capital.

In 1975, the Portuguese brewing industry was nationalised by a decision of the Armed Forces Movement - MFA following the revolution of 25 April 1974. There followed a period of restructuring of the sector.

On 30 December, CUFP was transformed into Unicer - União Cervejeira E.P. This resulted from the merger of CUFP with COPEJA (located in Santarém), and with IMPERIAL (located in Loulé), and also with RICAL (soft drinks plant in Santa Íria da Azóia). This new company was based in the premises of the former CUFP in Leça do Balio.

The 1980s marked the change of Unicer E.P. to Unicer S.A., with the company moving from the public to the private sector.

Super Bock wins the Gold Medal at the international competition Monde Selection de la Qualité

Unicer becomes a leader in the domestic beer market with a 50.8% share of the market.

On 26 April, an operation took place to privatise 49% of the capital. It was the first privatisation of a Public Sector Company. Maltibérica is established, of which Unicer is the majority shareholder, for the construction of its own malt house.

On 28 June, Unicer was totally handed over to the private sector, after the Portuguese Government sold the remaining 51% stake it held.

Unicer launches the Danish brand Carlsberg, strengthening the company’s position in the premium beer segment.

The first edition of the iconic summer festival Super Bock Super Rock is organised.

1998

Unicer associates itself with EXPO 98, with the brands Super Bock and Vitalis as official sponsors of the event, providing yet another push towards establishing its presence in Lisbon.

1999

Following Expo ‘98, Super Bock launched the "Super Bock, Official Beer of the year 2000" campaign, sponsoring a wide range of parties, concerts and contests.

In the first decade of the 21th century, the company was renamed Unicer, Bebidas de Portugal SA, after acquiring Grupo Vidago, Melgaço e Pedras Salgadas (VMPS) and Caféeira.

On 1 January, Unicer underwent another change, now becoming known as Unicer – Bebidas de Portugal, S.A.

Unicer – Bebidas de Portugal, SGPS, S.A. is established.In the first months of the year, the Group also acquired Grupo Vidago, Melgaço e Pedras Salgadas (VMPS) and the entire share capital of Caféeira.

Super Bock Stout is launched, initiating a move to expand the range of Portugal’s leading beer brand.

Super Bock mini and Super Bock Abadia, an artisanal beer, are launched.

Super Bock Mini Pull-Off is launched, using an innovative easy-open system, introduced into Portugal by its leading beer brand.

The Vidago Palace Hotel is reopened, officially inaugurated on the date of its centenary, 6 October.

Unicer launches a new cider brand, Somersby, in Portugal.

The reconversion and modernisation project is initiated in Leça do Balio, in the production and filling areas, taking this unit’s capacity to 450 million litres, and concentrating all of the company’s beer production.

The second phase of the Pedras Salgadas Spa & Nature Park project is inaugurated. This year also witnessed the launch of Super Bock Selecção 1927, a range of special artisanal beers, in limited editions. They strengthened Super Bock’s strong beer-making credentials, imbuing the category with sophistication.

In September, Unicer celebrated 50 years in Leça do Balio, with the inauguration of the new head office and Production Centre, in a ceremony that had the presence of António Pires de Lima, the Finance Minister.

On 7 March, the President of the Republic, Aníbal Cavaco Silva, presided over the official ceremony commemorating 125 years of Unicer, visiting the new industrial complex, a project that involved the greatest investment in its history, of more than 100 million euros.In October, the Super Bock Casa da Cerveja (House of Beer) was inaugurated.

Super Bock Selecção 1927 was permanently launched, in a range of four beers: Munich Dunkel, Bavaria Weiss, Bengal Ambar IPA, Czech Golden Lager.
